UPSC HISTORY

01

The Kushanas

The Kushanas were one of the most important political powers of post-Mauryan India. Their empire connected large parts of Central Asia, Afghanistan, northern India and the trade routes linking India with the Roman and Chinese worlds.

Why are the Kushanas important for UPSC?

Their period illustrates the interaction of politics, long-distance trade, Buddhism, art, coinage and cultural exchange across Eurasia.

Period c. 1st–3rd century CE
Core Region Central Asia to North India
Major Ruler Kanishka
Major Legacy Trade, Buddhism & Gandhara art
02

Who Were the Kushanas?

The Kushanas emerged from the Yuezhi, a group of Central Asian origin. The Yuezhi migrated westwards after pressure from the Xiongnu and eventually established themselves in the region of Bactria.

01

Yuezhi migration
Movement from Central Asia towards Bactria.

02

Five Yuezhi branches
Political consolidation gradually took place.

03

Kushana ascendancy
The Kushana branch became politically dominant.

UPSC Link

Remember the Kushanas within the wider phenomenon of Central Asian migrations and post-Mauryan political formations.

03

Kujula Kadphises

Kujula Kadphises is generally regarded as the founder of Kushana political power. He consolidated the Yuezhi territories and expanded towards the north-western regions of the Indian subcontinent.

Political role Consolidation of Kushana power
Expansion Afghanistan and north-western India
Coins Important evidence for early Kushana history
Successor Vima Kadphises
Historical significance

Kujula's reign marks the transition from a Central Asian political formation into an expanding trans-regional empire.

04

Vima Kadphises

Vima Kadphises expanded Kushana influence further into north-western India and is particularly important for understanding Kushana monetary and commercial history.

Gold Coinage Extensive gold coinage reflects the importance of commerce and monetary circulation.
Trade Kushana territory benefited from long-distance trade routes.
Religious Imagery Coins display diverse religious symbols and deities.
Strategic Geography Control of routes linking Central Asia and India strengthened the empire.
UPSC Concept

Kushana prosperity cannot be separated from trade-route geography and monetisation.

05

Kanishka I

Kanishka I is the most famous Kushana ruler. His reign represents the high point of Kushana political and cultural influence.

🏛 Empire

Kushana power extended across important parts of Central Asia and northern India.

☸ Buddhism

His reign is associated with the growth of Mahayana Buddhist traditions.

🪙 Coinage

His coins reveal remarkable religious and cultural diversity.

Important caution

Traditional accounts strongly associate Kanishka with the Fourth Buddhist Council, but details concerning its location, date and historical character are debated among scholars.

06

Kushana Political Geography

The Kushana Empire occupied a strategically important position between Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Central Asia ↓ Bactria ↓ Gandhara ↓ Mathura ↓ North India
Mathura Major political, religious and artistic centre.
Purushapura Important Kushana centre associated with Kanishka.
Gandhara Major centre of Buddhist art and cultural exchange.
Central Asia Connected the empire with trans-Eurasian trade.
07

The Kushanas and Long-Distance Trade

One of the most significant features of Kushana rule was its position along major overland and maritime commercial networks.

Silk Routes Kushana territories formed an important link between China, Central Asia and South Asia.
Roman World Trade connected Indian regions with the Roman world.
Gold Coinage Kushana rulers issued substantial gold coinage, especially under Vima Kadphises and Kanishka.
Urban Centres Cities such as Mathura benefited from commercial and cultural interaction.
Think like UPSC

Political control over strategic routes can generate economic power and simultaneously accelerate cultural exchange.

08

Buddhism and the Kushanas

Kushana rule coincided with major developments in Buddhist thought, institutions and artistic representation.

☸ Mahayana

The period is closely associated with the expansion and institutional development of Mahayana Buddhism.

📜 Scholarly Tradition

Buddhist intellectual activity flourished in monasteries and centres of learning.

🗿 Buddha Image

Anthropomorphic representations of the Buddha became prominent in this period.

Kanishka & Buddhist tradition

Kanishka is traditionally linked with a Buddhist council in Kashmir and with scholars such as Ashvaghosha and Vasumitra, although the historical details require careful treatment.

09

Gandhara and Mathura

Kushana-period art is especially important for UPSC because it demonstrates the interaction of Indian traditions with wider Central Asian and Hellenistic artistic influences.

Gandhara School

  • Primarily associated with the north-west.
  • Use of grey schist is characteristic.
  • Strong Hellenistic and Roman artistic influences.
  • Realistic treatment of human anatomy and drapery.
  • Important centre of Buddhist imagery.

Mathura School

  • Major centre in northern India.
  • Red sandstone was widely used.
  • Strong indigenous artistic traditions.
  • Important development of Buddha images.
  • Also represented Jain and Brahmanical traditions.
UPSC Comparison

Do not reduce the distinction to "foreign vs Indian". Both traditions developed in the Indian cultural context, while showing different artistic influences and styles.

10

A Cosmopolitan Empire

Kushana coinage provides especially valuable evidence of religious and cultural diversity.

Greek Greek deities and legends appear on early issues.
Iranian Iranian religious traditions are represented.
Indian Indian deities such as Shiva appear on later coinage.
Buddhist Buddhist symbolism developed alongside other traditions.
Key Concept: Cultural Interaction

The Kushana period demonstrates that ancient Indian history was not culturally isolated. Trade, migration, political expansion and religious networks created sustained interaction across regions.

11

Decline of Kushana Power

Kushana political power weakened gradually rather than disappearing through a single decisive event.

01

Fragmentation
Political authority became increasingly divided.

02

Regional Powers
Local and regional political formations gained strength.

03

External Pressure
Developments in Central Asia affected Kushana territories.

04

Rise of New Powers
Later political formations, including the Guptas in northern India, occupied the emerging political space.

Exam Perspective

Treat the decline as a process of political fragmentation and changing regional power structures, not simply as the result of one cause.
