1. Sayyid Dynasty — The Big Picture
c. 1414–1451 CE • The short-lived dynasty between the Tughlaqs and Lodis
Where do the Sayyids fit?
The Sayyid dynasty followed the decline of Tughlaq political authority and ruled Delhi from approximately 1414 to 1451 CE.
It was followed by the Lodi dynasty.
Why are they called Sayyids?
The rulers claimed descent from the Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatima and son-in-law Ali.
This claimed lineage formed an important part of their political identity.

3. Khizr Khan — Founder of the Dynasty
1414–1421 CE • The Sayyid political beginning
Before Delhi
Khizr Khan had been associated with the region of Multan and emerged as an important political figure during the period surrounding Timur’s invasion.
Timur’s Connection
Khizr Khan’s rise must be understood in the political environment created by Timur’s invasion and the subsequent weakening of the Tughlaq state.
1414
Khizr Khan captured Delhi and established the Sayyid dynasty.
Important Nuance
Khizr Khan did not initially assume the traditional title of Sultan.
His early rule retained a formal connection with the Timurid political order.
4. Why the Sayyids Were Weak
The dynasty’s importance lies partly in understanding the limits of Delhi’s authority.
Weak Territorial Control
The authority of the Delhi rulers was considerably more limited than during the high points of the Khalji and Tughlaq periods.
Regional Powers
Powerful regional rulers and local chiefs operated with substantial autonomy.
Political Instability
The rulers had to deal with rebellions, competing nobles and the limited resources available to the central government.
Historical Position
The Sayyid period therefore represents a transitional phase between the Tughlaq and Lodi periods.
🧠 Conceptual Chain
Tughlaq decline → weaker centre → regional assertion → Sayyid dependence → Lodi transition
5. Mubarak Shah
1421–1434 CE • The most significant Sayyid ruler after Khizr Khan
Accession
Mubarak Shah succeeded Khizr Khan in 1421.
Attempt at Consolidation
Mubarak Shah attempted to strengthen the authority of the Delhi Sultanate and deal with rebellions in different regions.
Political Environment
His reign illustrates the continuing struggle between the Delhi centre and powerful regional forces.
Death
Mubarak Shah was assassinated in 1434.
6. Muhammad Shah & Alam Shah
The final phase of Sayyid rule
Muhammad Shah
Muhammad Shah ruled from approximately 1434 to 1445.
His reign continued the pattern of political weakness and dependence on regional forces.
Alam Shah
Alam Shah succeeded Muhammad Shah in 1445.
He was the last Sayyid ruler.
Retreat from Delhi
Alam Shah eventually withdrew from Delhi and based himself at Badaun.
1451
Bahlul Lodi took control of Delhi and established Lodi rule.
