How to Prepare English for Class 6 (NCERT – Poorvi)
English in Class 6 is not only a subject but also a skill that helps you in all subjects and in daily life. The Poorvi English Textbook for Class 6 contains prose, poems, and activities that develop reading, writing, and communication skills. To prepare well, students should focus equally on language skills and values learned through stories and poems.
1. Reading and Understanding Lessons
-
Read each prose and poem slowly and carefully at least twice.
-
Underline new words and note down their meanings in a personal word diary.
-
Pay attention to characters, themes, and morals of stories.
-
In poems, notice rhyming words, imagery, and feelings expressed.
Tip: Read aloud regularly—it improves pronunciation, fluency, and confidence.
2. Writing Skills
Poorvi gives practice in paragraphs, notices, letters, dialogues, and short essays.
-
Paragraphs: Begin with a topic sentence, add 3–4 supporting ideas, and end with a conclusion.
-
Letters: Learn both formal (to teachers, principals) and informal (to friends, relatives) formats.
-
Notices: Keep them short, with heading, date, body, and signature.
-
Stories/Essays: Use simple sentences, arrange events in order, and add a suitable moral or conclusion.
Tip: Write something in English daily—a diary entry, description, or a short story.
3. Grammar and Vocabulary
Grammar in Poorvi is woven into lessons and activities. Focus on:
-
Parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
-
Tenses (present, past, future)
-
Articles, prepositions, and conjunctions
-
Active–Passive voice (introductory level)
-
Direct–Indirect speech (simple forms)
Vocabulary building:
-
Write meanings, synonyms, antonyms, and use each new word in a sentence.
-
Learn idioms and phrases introduced in exercises.
-
Practice spelling and word forms (noun ↔ adjective, verb ↔ adverb).
Tip: Revise grammar with practice worksheets and exercises given in the book.
4. Listening and Speaking Skills
-
Read aloud dialogues in the lessons with friends to practice fluency.
-
Listen to English news, rhymes, or stories on TV/radio.
-
Practice speaking on simple topics: “My School,” “My Favourite Hobby,” “A Day Without Electricity.”
-
Do pair activities from the book—role play, question–answer, group discussion.
Tip: Speak in English with teachers and friends daily—even short sentences build confidence.
5. Preparing for Exams
-
Revise exercises in the textbook carefully—comprehension Qs, vocabulary, and grammar.
-
Prepare short summaries of each prose and poem in your own words.
-
Memorise important lines of poems—sometimes they are asked for explanation.
-
Solve sample papers and practice writing within time limits.
-
Review mistakes in writing practice and avoid repeating them.
6. General Tips
-
Read English storybooks outside the textbook—Panchatantra, Ruskin Bond, or short folktales.
-
Keep a word bank diary with new words and sentences.
-
Practice peer learning—discuss lessons with friends in English.
-
Revise regularly instead of memorising the day before exams.
Preparing English with Poorvi – Class 6 is not about memorising answers, but about understanding, practicing, and using English every day. With regular reading, vocabulary building, grammar practice, and speaking activities, students will not only score well in exams but also develop confidence in real communication.
