How to Prepare for Social Science – Class 6 (NCERT)

1️⃣ Understand the Structure of the Subject

  • History (Our Past): Focuses on ancient history, early humans, Harappan civilisation, kingdoms, culture, and empires.

  • Geography (The Earth Our Habitat): Covers maps, landforms, oceans, continents, environment, and natural resources.

  • Civics / Political Science (Social and Political Life): Deals with democracy, government, rights, duties, and local governance.

Each part requires a different style of study — History needs timelines, Geography requires maps, and Civics needs understanding of concepts.

2️⃣ Read the NCERT Textbook Thoroughly

  • Read each chapter slowly and try to understand, not just memorise.

  • Underline or highlight key terms like “latitude,” “Harappan civilisation,” “Gram Sabha,” etc.

  • Make chapter summaries in your own words (5–6 lines per topic).

3️⃣ Prepare Notes and Charts

  • Make flowcharts, tables, and diagrams. Example: Primary → Secondary → Tertiary sectors.

  • Create timeline charts for History (e.g., Harappan, Vedic Age, Mauryan Empire).

  • Draw maps of India/world for Geography (label rivers, mountains, continents).

4️⃣ Practice Question-Answer Writing

  • Solve all NCERT in-text and end-text questions (very important for exams).

  • Practise extra questions (like the ones I have been preparing for you).

  • Write in short, clear sentences with proper word limits (30, 60, 100 words depending on question).

5️⃣ Use Memory Tricks

  • For History dates → make mnemonics (e.g., “326 BCE – Alexander came to India”).

  • For Geography → link directions and maps with real-life examples.

  • For Civics → connect with daily life (like Gram Panchayat in your village or municipality in your city).

6️⃣ Revise Regularly

  • Daily revision: 15–20 minutes after studying a chapter.

  • Weekly revision: Revise 2–3 chapters on weekends.

  • Final revision before exams: Focus only on important terms, key events, definitions, and maps.

7️⃣ Focus on Writing Skills

  • Practise writing answers within word limits (to save time in exams).

  • Use headings and points instead of long paragraphs.

  • Always include examples in answers (like AMUL for cooperatives, Indus Valley for urban planning).

8️⃣ Map Work and Diagrams

  • Practice labelling rivers, mountains, oceans, and countries.

  • Draw neat, simple maps and underline labels.

  • Geography exams often include a map-based question, so practise regularly.

9️⃣ Make it Interesting

  • Watch short educational videos on History and Geography topics.

  • Visit a museum or historical site (connects with History chapters).

  • Observe your local Panchayat/municipality (connects with Civics).

🔟 Exam-Day Tips

  • Read the question carefully (look for words like explain, list, differentiate).

  • First attempt short questions, then long ones.

  • In long answers, use intro – main points – conclusion format.

  • Always underline key terms in your answers.

  • Keep maps and diagrams neat, even if not asked (sometimes it gives extra marks).
